Background of the study
Codemixing, the blending of elements from two or more languages, is a salient feature of Nigerian digital communication. On platforms like WhatsApp and Facebook, users frequently mix languages to express complex identities and cultural nuances (Eze, 2023). This study explores how codemixing operates as a communicative strategy in Nigerian social media, where it reflects the linguistic diversity of the region. The research examines patterns of codemixing in WhatsApp messages and Facebook posts, analyzing how users switch between languages to negotiate meaning and context (Afolabi, 2024). These practices not only facilitate effective communication but also serve as a marker of cultural identity and social affiliation. By investigating the linguistic, social, and cultural dimensions of codemixing, the study seeks to provide insights into its role in shaping contemporary digital discourse and fostering intercultural dialogue (Ibrahim, 2024).

Statement of the problem
While codemixing is widely observed in Nigerian digital interactions, there is limited comparative research that examines its manifestations on different platforms such as WhatsApp and Facebook. Existing studies have not fully addressed the factors that influence the frequency and type of codemixing practices across these media. This research intends to fill the gap by systematically analyzing codemixing patterns and evaluating their impact on language practices in digital communication. The lack of comprehensive data on this subject restricts our understanding of how linguistic diversity is managed online (Chukwu, 2023).

Objectives of the study

  1. To analyze codemixing patterns in Nigerian WhatsApp and Facebook posts.
  2. To compare the frequency and types of codemixing across the two platforms.
  3. To evaluate the impact of codemixing on digital communication and cultural expression.

Research questions

  1. What are the predominant patterns of codemixing in Nigerian WhatsApp and Facebook posts?
  2. How do codemixing practices differ between these two platforms?
  3. What role does codemixing play in shaping cultural and linguistic identity online?

Significance of the study
This study is significant as it examines codemixing in Nigerian social media, providing insights into how multilingual practices shape digital communication. The findings will be useful for linguists, educators, and communication strategists interested in the impact of language diversity on online discourse (Okoro, 2023).

Scope and limitations of the study
The study focuses exclusively on codemixing in WhatsApp and Facebook posts within Nigerian digital discourse. It is limited to analyzing language practices on these platforms and does not extend to other media or offline communication.

Definitions of terms

  • CodeMixing: The practice of interspersing elements of two or more languages within a single communicative act.
  • WhatsApp Communication: Textual and multimedia exchanges conducted on the WhatsApp platform.
  • Facebook Communication: User-generated content posted on Facebook, reflecting personal and cultural narratives.
